ABSTRACT:Mumbai is the financial capital of India, home to big banks, NBFCs, and payment technology companies, and a hub for the country’s fintech movement. This paper studies payment innovation in Mumbai’s BFSI sector, and how UPI’s growing features, interoperability and cross-border reach are changing transactions and institutional strategy. The study examines three dimensions. First, it investigates UPI’s evolutionary disruption of traditional banking channels in Mumbai and its acceleration of the transition to real-time, app-based payments. Second, it looks into the sustainability implications – less paper consumption, energy savings and more financial inclusion for underbanked populations in Mumbai. Third, it tests UPI’s cross-border interoperability with countries like Singapore, UAE and France and their impact on Mumbai’s global payments position. The paper examines whether the continuing UPI innovation is contributing to systemic resilience or creating cybersecurity, privacy and compliance risks, using industry reports, RBI and NPCI publications and primary data from BFSI stakeholders in Mumbai. The paper closes with a framework to assess sustainable fintech growth in terms of pace of innovation, regulatory compliance and inclusivity providing practical guidance for the regulators and fintech companies in Mumbai.
