ABSTRACT: This research paper presents a multidisciplinary study of the Lonad Caves, located near Janwal village in Thane district, Maharashtra. The caves were excavated between the 5th and 8th centuries AD and were originally used as a Buddhist monastery and a place for monks to stay during the rainy season (Vassa). Over time, the site gradually changed from a Buddhist religious centre into a Hindu place of worship dedicated to Goddess Khandeshwari. This study examines the historical importance, archaeological features, cultural changes, and present-day significance of the Lonad Caves. It also explores heritage conservation, tourism potential, and the perceptions of the local community. By combining historical research, field observations, and cultural analysis, the paper highlights the importance of preserving this unique heritage site for future generations.
